How to use the database for searching:

There are 4 ways to filter items in the database:

Type

Under the "type" check-boxes you will find several types of content, such as Magazine Articles, book sections or journal articles. Selecting only one of the options will filter your search results to contain only items of that type. Selecting multiple options will filter your search results to contain items of either type.

For example: if you select both "magazineArticle" and "book", your search results will contain both magazine articles and books

Year

Under the "type" check-boxes you will find several intervals of years. Selecting only one of the options will filter your search results to contain only items from those years. You can extend the range of years by selecting more year intervals

For example: if you select both "2010-2020" and "2000-2010", your search results will contain database items dated between 2000 and 2020.

Tags

Under the "Tag" check-boxes you will find a number of tags to filter your search results. Selecting multiple tags enables an "OR" operation on these tags.

For example: if you select both "evidence-4" and "evidence-5", your search results will contain database items that have been rated with 4 or five stars.

For more information on the precise meaning of the different tags, see the Information section on tags. If you require all your search results to contain more than one of the tags, you can use the search bar.

Search Bar

The search bar enables users to enter their own keywords, such as authors, specific years and other specific search terms.

To search for a specific author, enter the surname of the author followed by a comma (,). For example, to find all articles by Noks Nauta, enter "nauta," into the search bar.

To search for database items in a specific year, enter "year__xxxx", where "xxxx" stands for the year number. For example, to find all database items from 1999, enter "year__1999" into the search bar.

To search for database items that contain more than one tag, enter the precise tag, seperated by a space, into the search bar. For example, to find all database items about adults with a rating of 5 stars, enter: "age-adults evidence-5" into the search bar.

More complex queries can also be executed by combining the functions from the search bar with the different checkboxes above. An example:

To find all articles from Noks Nauta, published after the year 2000, about adults, that have been rated with 2 or 3 stars: select "2000-2010" and "2010-2020" from the check-boxes in the "year" section, select "evidence-2" and "evidence-3" in the "tags" section and finally enter "nauta, age-adults" in the search bar. The "age-adults" tag is here entered into the search bar and not selected in the "tags" section to ensure that all database items found have the tag "age-adults".
